Today 85% of all photos are taken on mobile phones. With the latest devices sporting 10+ megapixels, portrait mode, jazzy features and filters to mimic high end camera functions in seconds, it begs the question, who the hell needs a camera anyway?
And while this has brands like Canon quivering in their boots, I always saw mobile phones as a big opportunity. Mobile phones have turned us all into photographers. They give more people more chance of nurturing a passion for photography which is eventually means willingness to invest better equipment which is where Canon comes in.
City Surfers is virtual photoshoot that transforms your mobile phone into a pro camera. Stepping through your mobile and out onto the banks of the river Eisbach in Munich to shoot the world’s best river surfers was the perfect hook into test driving Canon’s latest DSLR, the EOS-1D X Mark II. It was also the perfect location to show-off the camera’s incredible fast-action performance in low light. City Surfers essentially hacks your phone so you can shoot and share incredible DSLR quality photos your mobile could never normally achieve.
The great thing, and at times the problematic thing about the project is Canon don’t have their own products to support this type of image capture. This meant we had to build it all from scratch with our production partners, Media Monks.
Beyond the core experience, City Surfers is another great example of my integrated approach. My copywriter and I created the experience, shot three making-of films, 10 Instagram how-to and kit tip films, wrote all of the branded editorial, social posts, print, outdoor and display.
City Surfers was an amazing experience. I met some incredible people not to mention Samo our crazy Slovenian photographer who actually got onto Tao’s surfboard and rode the wave for a good 10 seconds before spectacularly wiping out.
